HR Audit in Kenya: What to Review Before Problems Become Urgent
An HR audit is a structured health check of the people function. It is most valuable before a dispute, inspection, rapid hiring phase or leadership transition makes weak controls expensive. The audit should show what exists, what is actually followed, what evidence is available and what should be fixed first.
Audit the employee lifecycle end to end
Do not inspect files in isolation. Trace a sample of employees from recruitment and onboarding through changes, leave, performance and exit. This reveals broken handoffs that a document checklist can miss.
- Offer and onboarding
- Contract and role records
- Attendance and leave
- Performance and conduct
- Pay-impacting changes
- Exit and clearance
Test controls as well as records
Ask who can approve a decision, what evidence is required, where it is stored and whether another person can verify it. Weak control design often appears as one person holding too much process knowledge, manual approvals with no audit trail or inconsistent exceptions.
Separate risk from housekeeping
Not every missing signature carries the same risk. Classify findings by impact and urgency so leaders can focus resources. A useful audit distinguishes immediate exposure, recurring process weaknesses and lower-priority documentation improvements.
Turn findings into an operating plan
Assign owners, deadlines and closure evidence to each significant finding. Recheck high-risk actions after implementation. The goal is not a long audit report; it is a stronger operating system for people management.
